The word seersucker comes from the Persian term shi-o-shakar, meaning milk and sugar, which later changed to shirushaka, meaning wrinkles and shrinkage. It then traveled to India and became known as shirsaker, and in 1722, it made its way into the English language as shrink-striped cotton fabric from India.
